Termites & Spiders Likely To Be A Problem This Spring & Summer
Last month, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) released its bi-annual Bug Barometer® forecast and it appears that for those of us living in Arizona and across the Southwest, U.S., there’s a good chance we’ll see increased termite activity this spring and summer thanks to mild temperatures and average rainfall. Of course, in areas where more precipitation is likely, spider populations will thrive.
Termites
Thankfully subterranean termites are not a threat to people; the same cannot be said for property though. These termites are attracted to water-damaged wood and moisture (which we have plenty of, especially during the monsoon season) and will infest homes and businesses in order to consume wood and wood by-products. While we don’t have the exact number for Arizona specifically, industry experts estimate that termites are responsible for 5 billion dollars in damage every year in the U.S.
What’s more, when the temps are mild and typically after rainstorms, winged termites swarm in order to mate and establish new colonies.
If you notice termite mud tubes along the foundation or inside your home, have witnessed a termite swarm on your property (indoors or outdoors), or see live termites, you should seek help right away!

Spiders
When it rains there’s likely to be more insect activity in and around homes. Since spiders prey on other bugs, naturally you’ll see more of arachnids around. Also, rainfall often forces ground dwelling spiders from their natural hiding spots and into structures.
Spiders frequently infest areas that are dark, cluttered, and home to other insects. If you notice these eight-legged pests in or around your home this spring and summer, our team of pest control pros can help.
